UK and US passport holders commonly travel visa-free for short stays, subject to no more than 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen Area. Monitoring this across multiple employees and trips can be complex. ComplyEur gives that process a single system of record.
With the EU Entry/Exit System now operational, border checks are increasingly based on digital movement records rather than routine passport stamps. That makes accurate internal monitoring more important for employers with frequent Schengen travel.
The 90/180-day rule
The 90/180-day rule commonly applies to visa-exempt non-EU nationals making short stays, including UK and US passport holders. Long-stay visas, residence permits, protected family-member rights, and bilateral arrangements can change an individual traveller's position. For an ordinary short stay, here's how the calculation works:
- 90-day limit: You can spend up to 90 days in the Schengen Area within any 180-day period.
- Rolling window: The 180-day period is calculated backwards from each day you want to enter or stay. It's not a fixed calendar period.
- Entry and exit days count: Both the day you arrive and the day you leave count as full days in the Schengen Area.
- All Schengen countries count together: Days spent in any Schengen country count toward your total (Germany, France, Spain, Italy, etc.).
Overstaying can result in fines, entry bans, and complications for future travel. For businesses, a refused or cancelled trip can disrupt operations.
